Earth Day Craftivism – Creating to Highlight Nature’s Beauty

Earth Day Craftivism – Creating to Highlight Nature’s Beauty

It’s a ‘chicken or egg’ kind of question: which came first, picking up a paintbrush or falling in love with the Living World?

I’m not entirely sure, but either way, what matters most is the undeniable connection between the two. As an artist whose spiritual beliefs are rooted in animism and forest witchery, I find inspiration in the land around me, in the environment in which I exist and grow. Wildlife, trees, clouds, and mushrooms… Each piece I create is a manifestation of the awe and reverence I hold for the Earth and its inhabitants.

I see crafting as more than just a hobby or business – for me, it is a way to advocate for the protection of wilderness spaces and fragile ecosystems. It took me a long time to actually see it that way, but it is a form of activism, albeit a gentle one, far removed from what I used to envision when saying that word – think loud, disruptive protests and public demonstrations. But then I came across the concept of ‘artivism’, and decided to extend this notion to ‘craftivism’. I like this word better, not only because it includes the projects that may not necessarily fit into the art category, but it also resonates deeper with the Craft – the woven layer of creativity and witchcraft at the foundation of my spiritual practice.

Regardless of the kind of project, when I create, I do so with intention. I strive to capture the essence of the natural world and, whenever possible, share it with others. By putting my work out there, my hope is to spark a sense of wonder and enchantment, encouraging you to go outside and see the world with new eyes. To deepen your connection with the Earth and its inhabitants, to revel in the majesty of a landscape carved by a river running wild, to feel awed by the presence of a tree much older than any of us, to hear beauty in the song of a frog in Spring.

Falling in love with Nature over and over again is what makes me want to take steps in my daily life to preserve it – hopefully, you can fall in love too.

The Empress - One of a Kind Wooden Decor

Coming back to what I create, wood has always held a special place in my heart. Its warmth, its texture and grain, its scent – all of it speaks to something primal within me, a wilderness untouched. That’s why a huge part of my work revolves around creating nature-inspired wooden decor. Whenever I offer a new piece, my goal is for you to bring a slice of the outdoors into your home, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the natural world.

Speaking of reminders, there is this quote from The Understory by Richard Powers that stuck with me after reading it. It keeps me company whenever I start working on a new piece, a sort of mantra if you will (it’s an excellent book by the way; if you love forests as much as I do, I highly recommend you check it out!).

What you make from a tree should be at least as miraculous as what you cut down.

Now, those are words to live by, don’t you think?

In addition to my wooden decor, I also create oracle decks infused with the magic of the forest.

There’s a good reason why I insisted on mentioning ‘nature-inspired oracle deck’ on the box of my first one, Wildera Lenormand. Each card I illustrated for this deck has imagery inspired by the Living World, from towering mountains to woodland critters to starlit night skies. As for Flow, the second Oracle I published, not only does it draw from the tradition of Ogham and the magic of trees often associated with it, but the aesthetic I went for literally revolves around Nature, with florals and leaves dancing in each mandala, celebrating life. Not to mention the wildlife that found their way into the illustrations: wolf, bee, snake, and bird…

The World Card - Tarot of a Forest Witch

Today, as I’m about to release my first Tarot Deck and share it with you, the main purpose behind my work – my intention – hasn’t changed. All of these decks serve as tools for you to connect with yourself but also with Nature, to deepen your connection to the Earth. As you draw cards and contemplate their meaning, my hope is that it allows you to seek guidance from the many spirits that inhabit it, to learn from what they have to teach, but also to see them, to listen, to care.

The forest has always been the place where I draw inspiration from. For me personally, the call of the wild comes from there: the tall evergreen trees, the resilient moss, the ancient ferns growing on the forest floor, the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. Without a forest nearby, I wither, and I cannot possibly imagine a world where they wouldn’t exist 🌲💛🌿

What we care for, we will grow to resemble. And what we resemble will hold us when we are us no longer.

Yes, that quote is from the same book – I could pull out dozens of them, it is that good.
